Mayo Clinic (my employer) recently published the following:
Honey: An effective cough remedy?
A recent study suggests that honey may help calm coughs.

This may be old news to many of you, but I recently tried it with my grandson and it did seem to help--suspect it was better than knocking him out with Ny-Quil!

I've heard before that a spoonful of buckwheat honey is supposed to be more effective than children's cough syrup.
I always heard it was a teaspoon of honey in a glass of bourbon
Actually almost all of the commercial cough meds have been delisted for kids under 5. The recommendation is honey instead.

Just finishing off a cold with a bad cough, have always used honey with any type cold or flu. I find that the honey eases the pain of the cough, not so raw and grating. I suppose it does suppress it some, but I don't mind coughing to clear the airways - without the pain. Another great way I have found to use honey is to crush a clove of garlic in...down the hatch - seems to help knock the bugs down and feel better.

My grandmother used to give us honey/whiskey mix for our coughs.
