I was wondering what you think of this idea for winter:
I am migrating for work and want to leave my hives in a pretty good way, won't be around to wrap them or fuss over them, so I was trying to think of a way to keep them comfy.
I have a big pole barn, walls on 3 sides and an entrance somewhat draped with canvass on the 4rth. I was gonna make a little platform for the two hives to sit on, and hoist the works up with a block and tackle so it was 10 feet off the ground or so. I'm hoping the mice won't climb down the rope, but I'll put entrance reducers on in any case. I figure this way the hives are sheltered from the wind and have a fairly cozy space to fly to void feces if need bee, and figure they shouldn't need wrapping if out of the wind (although Cape Breton does get a mean winter generally). Because they are up high nothing should bother them, again unless the mice decide to climb up and down the rope and/or chains. Was thinking if I suspend the higher block from a chain and grease the chain the mice might have a real time if they even thought about it.
