Has anyone ever squished ants as a child, or an adult and immediately smelled a unique sweet smell that only happens when you squish them or otherwise seriously endanger their lives? Ie disturbed their hill or nest.
I'm assuming this is an alarm pheromone I'm smelling.
The smell of bananas people speak of smelling in bees as an alarm pheromone, is it similar?
The smell i speak of with ants is very distinctive for me. About a month ago my sister and I were driving down the road and smelled the sell from our car, we both commented it smelled exactly like the smell of ants being injured or killed. It had previously been many years since I had been cruel enough to ants to smell it. The same goes for her, but we both smelled the smell and immediately recognized it as the dead ant smell as we called it. Seems we were both quite cruel to ants in our childhood.
If anyone is familiar with this smell, and the bee alarm pheromone, could you say it is similar, the same, or totally different?
