I set up an ant guard on my stands. This idea should work for any hive stands that have small pipe or tubing or square tubing legs.

I cut up a white rag (one that came in a bag of 12 rags from home depot) into approximately 3/4" x 6" strips and tied a strip around each hive stand leg.

Then I sprayed those strips with some ant spray that is pyrethrum based and lasts for 12 weeks (as stated on the label).

Seems to be working so far, but then, I've only had it up there for a couple days. This is looking like the best non-invasive way I've come up with for keeping ants away from the hives so far. Unfortunately this only works for hivestands that have tubing or pipe legs.

I would be worried that my bees may come in contact with it? Don't know, but I'm a worrier so there ya go.

Put a plastic container or metal can with oil under each leg. Even water will keep the ants away.

this has been the best way from of ant control I have seen. I've seen this done by many of old beekeepers. Besides, you keeping pesticides away from your bees.
