I helped a older fellow go through his hives and noted that I only saw maybe 5 beetles throughout 6 or 7 double brood box hives (all were not healthy hives either).
He said what he did was to sprinkle a tablespoon of cinammon on each end of the box across the ends of the frames.
Just that simple.
He also said mix 2lbs of pwdered sugar and 10-12 oz of garlic powder would do the same.
evidently the beetles can't stand the smell of either.
I am going to do this in the next couple of days.
If you try this please respond back to say how effective it was.

Went through my hives and had a LOT of hive beetles.
I put the cinammon at the top ends of the frames.
I'll check back in a week to see if there is an improvement and in two weeks i'll try the powdered sugar and garlic powder.
They did seem to scatter when i applied it.

It would seem that the garlic could get into the honey and seriously affect the taste. The cinammon sounds good and I am going to try it as these beetles have been devestating to me this year.

'Beekeeping for Dummies' says cinnamon inside the hive will get rid of ants; Randy Oliver's pollen sub formula (scientificbeekeeping.com) uses cinnamon in his recipe. Maybe cinnamon has something?
Did you notice reduction in SHB after only 1 tablespoon and 1 treatment?

I put more than a tablespoon in. I put some all over the top of the frames 1 time and 1 week later checked a only saw a few SHB left.

Very interesting especially considering just yesterday I came across an article suggesting using cinnamon to get rid of those tiny black ants that sometimes invade people's kitchens.
I'll be very interested to see the results of the rest of yall's experiments. I would want to know if a) it works and b) is it also safe for the bees?

Any news to report on the effects?

I tried too many things to be able to say the cinammon worked. I removed old equipment, made traps, used cinammon, used the powdered sugar with garlic, bought AJs beetle eaters, and sprayed the ground around the hives. I still have SHBs but not as bad.
I have noticed that there are always several on the top cover above the inner screened cover where the bees cannot get to easily. The bees seem to be trying to get to them through the screen. I will be removing the screens now that the temp has dropped a little.

Well other than pissing off the bees and SHB's that got cinammon on themselves while I was sprinkling it onto the top bars, it does not appear to have had much affect on the SHB. I still have them in what look like the same numbers.
Another thing that I have tried is getting my hives into more sunlight and crowding my bees a little more. That seems to have helped reduce the obvious numbers of SHB in my hives.
