Hi all,

I was just wondering how many of you out there have associations that are planning an event for National Honey Bee Awareness Day (NHBAD) which is August 22nd.

My association is having a small event, but I think it will be fun. Here's what we're doing and I would love to hear other ideas.

Observation hive
Local beekeepers for Q & A and to give out information
Honey extracting demonstration
Honey tasting (local honey varieties)
Lectures on beekeeping and gardening for bees
Examples of nectar plants that bees love
Face painting and coloring for kids
Beekeeping tools for the public to view/touch
Virtual hive

I don't see that our club is doing anything that date. We have an open-hive at a member's beeyard the week before but nothing on that date.

I'll probably invite my few neighbors over for an informal open hive so they can meet the girls up close and personal. Since I only have two veils (one a bee suit that is snug on me and the other on a jacket that I use,) it will be a one-on-one for interested parties. Hope the bees are patient and I'll try not to be too intrusive.

Thanks for the reminder!

Wayne

Yes, the bee's work pollenating will be highlighted at our event. :)

Oh. I thought he was using pollenation as a euphemism.

There is a local farmer's market, and they have approved our local bee club to set up a table and distribute literature and display the Bee Smart game we have for kids. There 'might' be an enclosed observation hive there too.

We are having a Honey Trail. Beekeepers from our association will open their apiaries for tours and observations. Some will be selling honey - all will be answering questions. I am looking forward to see how others have their hives set up.

That's a great idea! We were hoping to have enough volunteers that we could have two events, but perhaps for one of our counties we could do that. I'll have to send an email out to our members and see if we can get enough participation and still keep our original event going.
