Hey guys, just seen one of these screened inner covers. Does anyone use one, and if so what are the pros and cons. I'm assuming one pro is ventilation.

I use several but the ones I purchased had regular screen wire, not #8 wire which is stiffer. Screen wired sagged and the bees just stuck it to the top of the hives. One side had entrances. When used with the entrances available to the bees the screen is a little higher up but it still sagged some and stuck to the top of the frames in places.

Like the idea. But make sure the screen is #8 wire cloth and that the inner cover is a little deeper than normal (kind of like a spacer).

I also have ICs that our plexiglass. Tried cutting a hole in one of them but the plexiglass just split real bad. Did get a whole in in though and then stapled some scree wire to the outside. Now I can see in really good, have added ventilation and can also top feed with gallon paint cans.

I have one that I use on a hive that has a solid bottom board, to help with ventilation. I prop the top cover with a piece of wood.
They do tend to propolize around the edges and have attached some wax to it in couple places.

I use them on all of my hives all year long. They are great. Most obvious is that it provides vent. This is great for summer but also great for winter. I have no mold or condensation problems during the winter. Bees propalis edges but it doesnt matter. Another pro is you can take the tele cover off and look inside without the bees getting to you. Nice way to peek inside. I use SBB as well and bearding is greatly reduced. They still beard a little and fan to cool the hive but I think with a greatly reduced effort. Like I said its all I use and all I use all year round.

sbb AND a screened inner cover all year. Moisture is more a problem here then cold. I only use the screened inner cover when I'm not feeding. When I feed I use a screened top feeder. That way I can take off the top and refill without worry about the bees coming up to greet me.
