View Full Version : converting a TBH

I made my first TBH this year and placed a swarm into it. It is doing well.

To save time, I have decided to convert it into a unique langstroth type of hive. I am going to make a frame around the top edge of the TBH that will allow about 3/8" space between the top of the top bars and a piece of plywood that will become the bottom of another new box. It just so happened that I got luck and made the TBH wide enough that the new box will hold a standard size frame.

Here's the problem. The existing TBs are tight against each other. The bees will need access to the next level up. I am thinking of drilling some holes into the new cover/bottom of the new box so the bees can get into the new box. I am not sure they will even consider taking advantage of this new box. I am not sure, but I believe that if I space the existing TBs the 3/8" it will be too much space between the existing comb. Right now the TBs are 1-3/8" wide by 19" long. They are making plenty of comb and lots fo brood.

Does anyone have some advice for me, before I go to the trouble of building the new box and the frameless new bars? (I will be building another top for the new box so that if it works, I can just add another new box and move the top up one more level.

Any suggests are appreciated. If I should not waste my time, that will be good to know as well.

Make some bars that are 1 1/4 wide, and glue 1/8 inch tabs on the sides to space the bars on 1 3/8 centers. (Just like the end bars on a Langstroth frame leaves a gap between bars.) It will also give the bees 1/4 inch between bars.

I am trying to find it but there are photos and an article of TBH with a Langstroth box on top in a guys garden. he built it to be able to use the box as a honey super. Very interesting.

Good to hear - at least it may be possible.

I left off part of my plan.

If I do not try and space the TBs wider than they already are, might I consider making a few access holes through the TBs giving a way for them to get to the lid/base of the new box. Make a large opening in the lid/base.

A. Take my TBH and drill holes through the TBs for bee access.
B. Put a lid/base with at least one large opening over the TBH.
C. put a new box with frameless bars on to the lid/base
D. Add a lid to the new box

Does this make sense? Any concerns I shuld consider?
