Hi all,
I found this DIY plan for making a SHB trap:
http://www.greenbeehives.com/
I just wanted to get some opinions on this. It says to use #6 mesh, but I thought most SBBs used #8? Any thoughts?

Great link, but a beek friend of mine used something like this. Only draw back was during heavy rain the trap filled with water. But I think I seen away to make a small improvment here. I will post it later after I look at the link again closer......

Looks like they have standardized what I do;

Mine is custom built for each hive (based on what I have laying around, and how motivated i am when I get the urge to install it. I use disposable aluminum pans from the grocery (I reuse them till they get really nasty) under a #8 stainless screen. I build a slot into the back of the hive stand.

I like that this one seals the opening in the back. I would like to see a drip guard to keepthe pan from filling with water when it rains.

I get a few bees in there from time to time - I assume they are robbers because the bees from that hive know their way in and it isn't thru the bottom in the back.

Let us know how the #6 screen works,

I have built several prototypes of similar bottom boards with a bit of a different design. I am using #8 hardware cloth and the beetles do get through that. My design does not allow much if any water in during a rain.

Right now I am in the testing phase of these bottom boards. SHB is my biggest concern in FL as they can ruin a hive in a matter of a few weeks if they are allowed to get out of control.

I would be really interested in seeing other people's plans, if anyone cares to share ;)

I am not giving away my plans at this point as I am considering offering for sale at some point. I am considering offering some prototypes for testing and in return for testimonials. My biggest issue is getting a pan the right size and/or made for a reasonalble price.

I recently discovered a few SHBs in some newly acquired hives a few miles from my home beeyard. I have about 20 of the small Hood traps and was wondering if these work. Anyone using these?

I apply a layer of white salt or pickling lime around the hives at home to kill the larvae when they enter the soil and have not had much trouble with SHB in this yard. I'm going to do this to the new yard asap but need to get rid of the adults inside the hives.

Can someone post pictures of both small hive beetle larvae and wax moth larvae so I can tell who I need the trap for?
Thanks.

Also, has anyone had luck with the liter jug filled a few cups of apple vinegar and a cup of sugar as a trap for wax moth (setting the bottle near or on hive)?
