View Full Version : Bees building weird comb

Again when I checked the bees yesterday the same hive is building comb perpendicular to the two frames. Why are they doing this and should I be taking it out or just leave them? It seems if I leave it it will make quite a mess trying to get the frames out. How can I discourage them from building this way?

Thanks

Are they doing this between all the frames in that hive or just between two specific frames?

You can cut the burr comb part and put the frames in different location so they are not facing each other.

If you doing have spacers in that super be sure the frames are spaced probably, besure that the space at the front of the frames are the same at the end of the frames.

Be sure that the frames are %100 vertical (i.e has a 90degree angle with the ground).

But sometimes they just do it. Scrape it off and sometimes they rebuild. If it's in my way I scrape it off, if it's not I leave it alone...

If it's a lot, I'd cut it and tie it (rubber band it) into frames. If it's only a little between one frame and the next, I'd scrape it out and throw it away.

Its just the one hive and it seems to be in the middle, there are 10 frames and everything is spaced evenly, I think I will try and band the next ones to the empty frames. - good idea!

I think that you don't want the frames spaced evenly, you want them squished together in the middle of the box. Having them spread far apart can encourage burr comb.

It's not your fault this is happening. Sometimes you get a hive of bees that is genetically predisposed to drawing perpendicular brace comb. You can try to deal with it and steer the bees by removing the brace comb and other tricks or you can replace the queen. Just make sure the new queen is not related to the bees in the problem hive.

It would be great to get a picture to see it better, if you can, get a camera digital or scan your photos and upload and go to http://imageshack.us/

and show us, but few things that would come to my mind would be,

HOW MUCH SPACE BETWEEN YOUR FRAMES

IS YOUR HIVE TILTED, Bees use the sun to get a right angle .... so
try not to tilt your hive .. but im not to sure yet, be nice to see a pic.
