using Green Drone Frames - Scratch open or out?

In the past I have frozen these green drone brood frames, but that was getting problematic with remembering which have had a frame in and which one did not, etc. so now I have taken to just scratching them open and putting them back in the hive for the bees to clean out.

I heard that maybe what I should be doing is not just scratching them open but actually scratching all of the drone larvae/brood them OUT of the comb, which is a lot messier.

What do folks here do?

Continue to freeze the drone brood to kill the varroa. Buy a notebook to record which hive has the drone frame and the date it was put in.

When you pull the one for the freezer, install another one.
So there's always one in there.
