I have a hive of Italians that are doing a great job of doing what bees do best, build and make more bees.
The hive is a standard 10 frame deep super that has a good amount of comb, brood pollen and honey on 9 of the 10 frames.
I just put a medium super on top of this one. Is there anything that I can do to promote the building of comb in the new super?
Any guesses as to how long it will be before I start seeing brood up top?
There is a good amount of pollen and nectar coning into the hive, so food is not an issue.
Thanks,
Steve

Thinned out syrup will promote comb building even if their is a flow during daylight hours cuz they can use the syrup during rainy periods and at night.
If your bees are strong they could have brood in the new super already. If they are weaker it could take 2 wks. Every colony is different.

If you are using plastic foundation (e.g. pierco) try spraying syrup on some

I pulled a deep frame from the brood box up into the new medium leaving the space below open where the deep frame extends down. the bees moved up right away. they pulled drone comb on the bottom of the deep frame to fill the empty space. when the drone comb was fully capped three weeks later I cut it off and put the deep frame back down. by that time the medium box was mostly drawn out and the queen was using it.
that's what worked for me.

We did similarly to beekinjax. We put 1 brood frame with bees in the upper box, a filled the hole with a plastic frame. The next week there where eggs on 2 of the new frames in the upper.
One of them was wall too wall eggs.
