I am putting a package into a new tbh next week. Everything is set and I've installed bees into Langstroth(sp) before with little problems. On installing a package into a tbh, I understand why the queen cage should not be left as it will cause a mess as bees build comb off of it, but I don't know how to "direct release" the queen.

How do I direct release without her flying off? Should I soak her good with spray syrup to keep her from flying temporarily and then open her cage and shake her into the bottom first?

Thanks for any advice and please dumb it down for me.

Take the queen in cage and set her aside for 20 minutes while you shake the bees into the hive and spray down with sugar water, if you like. Then open the queen cage and release her into the bees. Being without the bees for 20 minutes primes her to go right in and be accepted. This is how I would do it myself at any rate.

Ray's right on the money.
We took our queen into our home, after bees were shaken and sprayed with water (calm down) with the box placed outside the hive on the ground so the rest could go as they pleased. We pulled the cork and put our finger over the hole. Not more difficult than that. Went outside and put the whole thing on the floor. Went back the next day and took the cage out. She can't sting so worry not about your finger. We sat outside the hive after the release just to make sure she didn't leave town. It's OK

I had great results with my 2 direct releases this spring. I shook the packages into the front end of the hive then replaced all the bars but 2 at the back end of the hive. I pulled the plug on the cage (after spraying her prior w/sugar syrup) while reaching down inside the 2 open bars and set the cage on the bottom, then replaced the bars. I also covered my entrance with a piece of queen excluder for a couple days just to make sure she didn't leave. About a week later I removed the empty cages on the bottom. Worked great.
