Well, it seemed almost like a cut-out. I built my first tbhs way too big. Everyone said I'd have trouble handling the combs and they were right. But what big beautiful combs they were!!

The bees produced massive amounts of brood but no surplus honey. We cut the combs down and rubberbanded them into standard deep frames. These were put into Langstroths. The bees were surprisingly good natured about the process.

I did build two more TBHs. These accept standard deep frames (foundationless). I'll get natural comb in a form I can handle. We'll see about the honey.

Congratulations!
But from the looks of things neither you nor the bees will suffer much. Nice looking comb. It will be curious to see how they fare compared to your Langstroths.
BTW, the base of your TBH, how do you get roundy wood?
I mean, it is a beautiful base but it looks like plywood. Did you kerf strips to make it round or simply cut a half circle? The photo is to small for me to see with these old eyes.
What I meant to say is that I am jealous of your pleasing lookin' hive. Well done.

I'm a cabinetmaker...we do a good bit of yacht interior work. These TBHs were made with leftover "bending plywood". It's 3/8" thick and the grain runs the short way on a 4 X 8 sheet. I made the main body of the hive to fit a standard deep frame and curved the plywood from there to make a bottom. The combs are way too big to handle.

Jealous am I!

And those are foundationless? Looks like you need another super on there, Frank. Or are they trying to build queen cells?

WOW But mine only had the top bar for support. Maybe I'll consider some sort of rounded frame bottom to fit these hives.
