Just read Barry's message on the Tailgater. Time could not have been better. After thinking about it a bit I have decided to extend my garden patch and add a large number of squash plants to the number I had thought of planting. Come fall I can drop off a significant amount of squash to the local food bank. Pretty sandy soil, a lot of things do not thrive in my sand but squash usually does pretty well. Anybody else want to try something similar?

We just hauled in couple hundred pounds of pork sausage to our local food bank. They said that they are feeding quite a few more people now and haven't had meat to distribute for months.:(
I've just started fattening a steer to butcher in a few months. I think I'll add in a second one and then keep twice as much of my favorite cuts but have everything else turned into hamburger. That way I'm always eating good but I'll have tons of versatile meat to give to the food bank.
Raising two and giving one away is still cheaper than buying at the store.

Not a bad idea huh! I'll be hopefully producing way more than I'll need this year in the garden. Bunnies are taking off now too, I know I'll have more of those than I can use. And your right CP! Still way cheaper to raise the meat and give some away than buying at the store.

I'll have to make the effort to find a place or people to drop all the extra stuff.

I haven't made a big enough crop yet to be of any service but honey is a great donation to rescue missions that help people who struggle with addictions. It helps smooth out the highs (or lack thereof:D) and lows of withdrawl symptoms- especially from alcohol. What a great way to give.

We try to do something every year, I come from the hard knock street back ground and Know what help can do for the needy. we don't have a big homeless problem where most of us now live but there are other avenues to help. We take our surplus garden to the local senior center and they distribute to those who need it or can't grow anymore, You can take deer to share the harvest,And as a former abuser I always try to help someone trying to run a better life. Sometimes looking past personal beliefs and just lending A hand can really make the difference in someones life or struggle. It doesn't always take money. Hope and friendship are the best gifts in troubled times.THERE, IF NOT BY THE GRACE OF GOD, GO I. John, Have a wonderful day and pass it on:gh:
