I'm brand new to beekeeping this year. I inherited my grandpa's equipment after he passed away last year. Of course, now that he's gone, I wish I would have learned more about beekeeping from him. From his equipment, I was able to piece together enough for about two hives. He hasn't used any of it for the last three or four years, but it was outside in his shed through the winters- should have freezed away any issues? I took a beekeepers class this winter, have read several books, and have been reading this forum for quite a while. I think I am ready for the packages I'm getting this weekend?!?! One question that I wanted to throw out there was regarding the frames in my deep brood boxes. I have several frames that are drawn and are blackish/brownish with a few dead bees in them, but are otherwise in good shape. Then there are several frames of drawn comb that is whitish/yellowish- looks like newer stuff that maybe never had anything in it? On a few of these frames they're not even completely drawn out. Finally, I ordered some new frames and ritecell foundation from Mann Lake. My question is, how should I set up the first boxes that I put my new packages into? Also, is there a certain way to arrange them in the box? Drawn frames in middle? I hope this makes sense and thanks for any feedback.

yes, you are correct white wax was probably only used to store honey, ydllow maybe limited brood, it gets darker the more it has been used for raising brood.

as long as you are confident -- no disease -- then give them (all?) the drawn frames that you have, in the center of the box with foundation to the outside if needed. Although if you are only adding a few (1-4) new frames w/ foundation, I like to put already drawn combs on the outside edges of the box, with foundation they sometimes will never really get to work on these unless you give them no other choice.

make sure you push all the frames together in the center of the box if you are adding plastic foundation

Thanks Abeeco- that helps a lot. I get my packages tonight!!
So, is there such a thing as comb that is too dark? Some of it is very dark brown. Is there a time when you should quit using drawn comb and replace the foundation?

The queen & bees both love it. Will look quite a bit better after they have their way with it.
