I was given a hand-powered smallish Dadant stainless steel extractor.

It has two plastic gears. The large of the plastic gears, the top one, is broken, missing about 1/3rd of its teeth.

I tried calling Dadant, but after 15 min on hold I gave up and decided to ask here.

Has anyone replaced a broken gear? Do you know how to take it off? It looks like a little piece of metal might be holding it in, that I could punch out of the drive shaft.

did you call paris or their main office?

I likely have one about like your that I took in trade. the gears don't look so substantial.

Thats why we wont use plastic gears, and opt for belt driven.

Dadant is going to mail me a new gear for something like $6 + shipping.

I'm assuming that these gears breaking is not all that unusual.

Anything subject to extensive wear & tear, external forces, etc. needs to be made of a substantial material. Sometimes plastic parts are ideal for the need, other items need to be made of a higher strength product. I've seen a number of those used extractors and each one had teeth missing in the gears. Glad a replacement product is readily available.
