I want to make a few triangle escape boards to clear supers. Can queens fit through them (above coming down normal direction) ? What size are the channels (bee space ? ) ? If you do not use excluders how do you ensure the queen did not wander up before you put escape board on ? Would house bees not also stay above the escape to tend the supers ? I have Bee- Quick but would like to try triangle escapes.
Thanks
Mike

I have used the triangle board and have never had a queen come through one. The queen shouldn't be in the honey super (notice i said shouldn't) anyway i've never found one there. I have always had a few house bees left in the honey supers, but very few. I just made some without the double triangle (the followboard type) to see how it will work.I made the three openings 3/8" by 3/8" but i haven't used it yet. Maybe someone else on here will know the opening size. Good Luck, Jack

They can leave but just can't figure out how to get back. If one did it would be real isolated case. House bees would not stay to tend honey, only nurse bees maybe on brood. You only use escape boards to get them off the honey, not to drive them out of a brood chamber. Tests have shown tiangle boards to work better than standard escapes or conical escapes. Works great for me. Dadant sells them for $10.25. Buy one and copy if you want more. If you ony have a couple hives you shouldn't need more than one.

one hint to using is mark all four sides with an arrow pointing the way you want the bees to go, they may ignore the arrow but before you go to pull the honey super you really should insure that the arrow is pointing the proper way. they get very angry when they cant get out of the supers. they also work better with cool nights and no brood in them. really warm nights and they don't seem to like to leave.

Make sure there are no spots a bee can get through into the super from the outside. You would be suprised how fast a super can be robbed out. Ask me how I know. Also they work best on a single super at a time. If you try to clear two or more supers at a time there are alot more stragglers.

I HAVE MADE A VORTEXBEE ESCAPE BOARD IT WORKS GREAT ,THE QUEEN IS NOT VER OFTEN UP IN THE HONEY SUPERS. I GOT THE PLANS FROM ''WWW.dave-cushman.net/bee/vortexescape.html, when i used it ,it took between 15 min. to 20 min for bees to go down out of honey supers, you can print the plans off the web site
good luck, PETER
