View Full Version : Using and Reusing Waste Oil (fuel and lubricant)

We've save somewhere around 30 gallons of waste oil from oil changes. My intent was to carry it in to recycle. Then my wife showed me her stack of old Mother Earth News magazines (you know, the ones that actually had GOOD articles in them). One of the articles showed how to make an engine oil cleaning system. Simply: heat to evaporate any water and filter through a fine filtation system. so I hung onto the oil. And the collection grew.
Recently, I've discovered these uses:
Burn in a forge for blacksmithing
Burn in a heater space heating
AND
a friend of ours runs her truck on waste enging oil.
I'm very interested in this last one. Anyone know about or do any of these?

I remember the "toilet paper" filters for used oil.
They did a pretty good job.

as far as waste engine oil goes, I have met a few people running it and none of them have had sucess in the long term. Look into "waste vegetable oil conversion" for a much more eco friendly and engine friendly alternative if you have a diesel.
however, I have met some who run a small percentage -maybe 5% but (up to possibly 15-20 % in the extreme) waste engine oil mixed with diesel to provide lubrication that the new ULSD does not have and they are happy, no broken down trucks from it that I have seen
We run a truck on WVO and frankly I've been thinking about the use of Waste petro oil as well. One of the conecpts behind the orginal diesel engine was it's ability to use waste petroleum based oils (since then everyone used lard not veggie in cooking). I would expect there is a way to to clean and use the oil as fuel.
Are we talking about animal/vegetable oils? Or used Engine oil?

I was refering to waste engine oil (petrolium). I'm familiar with the WVO (waste vegitable oil) use as a deseil alternative. I've not read anything about using engine oil for fuel, but my wife knows someone who does it. they want my stash. Not if I Can use it...
the only filtration system I've read mentions using a fiber rope (like cotton) to literally wick the clean oil out of the dirty oil container. The claim is that the grime won't wick. But what about the water and other liquid contaminates?

I know people that use it as a dog "shampoo" for dogs with mange. They say it works.

It is, but the oil tests out pretty good. I wouldn't
reuse it for engine oil myself unless you have an
oil burner already.
There are currently many bypass filter systems out
there that use the same low tech. Frantz Filter for
one.

That's just it - I'd never reuse the oil in an engine using such a high-tech toilet paper filter. And, for the cost of a unit such as a Frantz filter, it doesn't make economic sense. Today's lubricants, engines and filters are light-years in durability past the engines which we grew up learning to rebuild and tune. All that is needed is for a Frantz gizmo device to fail, clog or hamper oil flow in an engine running at highways speeds, and boom! - no more engine.

There was a company next door to mine that recycled used motor oil for lubrcation. The method was to pump it into a tall tank (the taller the better) and allow it to settle, (6-12 months) then pump it out, leaving the crud behind in the tank and filter. It will come out as clean and clear as new motor oil. The detergents, and additives remaining in the oil is another thing.
I have seen the same thing in my salvage yard when a used engine didn't sell for a long time and when a interested customer pulled the dip stick the oil looked brand new. I had checked the oil when I bough the car or truck and it was gunky dirty then.
we do . i mean used to do the same thing swamprat

I mix all waste oil with our heating oil, I imagine it is less than 10% used oil with 90% heating oil. We use it for space heating ang water heating and have for about 10 years, we find the filters plug up twice as often but that is a small price when compared to the cost of fuel and hauling off and paying for its disposal.
