This is my first post. My daughter is taking beekeeping up for her home school project this year and She is 7.
I am reading a few books on beekeeping which is great info but I am a hands on learner. It really helps to see what they are doing. I think a video would be easier for her as well.
I notice there are about 5 different videos which I have seen on different beekeeping sites as well as ebay. I would like one that not only goes over the basics but goes beyond basics into more trouble shooting problems. Mainly diseases that might arise and how to keep the bee hive healthy. Has anyone seen any of these video's and would recommend one over another? I also live in a very cold climate and I did not know if a video from a warmer climate would not bee as useful. :) Thanks for your help.

There are various bits on youtube that are quite interesting, and you could hapily spend a couple of hours watching and searching. Some are better quality than others.

The dvd's and videos that I have seen have not been great - particularly the ones aimed at teaching a beginner. Maybe that is just me. A subscription to a magazine, such as the ABJ or Bee Culture will keep you up to date with disease, with the advantage of appropriate pictures etc. Also, as a resource, this forum is fantastic.

In my opinion, the truely outstanding dvd's are those by Brother Adams (the monk and the honeybee) and Susan Cobey's Instrumental Insemination one, neither of which are particularly relevant for what you are looking for. The others are of varying usefulness, and tend to be expensive for what they are.

If you do make a purchase, it would be very helpful if you could post a review of it.

I like Keith Delaplane's "Year in the life of an apiary", which is 8 half-hour segments originally done for RFD-TV. It starts with assembling the hives and takes you through extracting honey. It's just a bit dated with respect to treating for disease, but otherwise an excellent series. You can order it here:
http://www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/tv/videocatalog/bees.html
(If you call the phone number to order, you'll get a recording which asks you to leave your credit card number and address.)

I also recommend that you get connected with a local beekeeping club. Much of beekeeping is "location specific", and the local beeks will be able to help you in those areas. Also, clubs often offer beginning beekeeping classes that you might be interested in. See if any of these are near you:

Lastly, don't forget to check your local library for any beekeeping books & videos they might have.

I saw this series on RFD-Tv, that is what got me interested enough to actually try beekeeping. I also have the companion book from the college referred to in the above link. Lots of basics.

Thanks for all the great info. I have just contacted my local beekeeping club and I am planning on buying that DVD.
