Are there any search engines that are less driven
by commercial info??? I have noticed that Google
has become more and more clouded by ad based
hits.

For an example if you Google "Amazon" the first
page only has one hit that pertains to the Amazon
river....... and that one is an indirect hit.

I realize ads are important for the search engine,
but it would be nice to find a new one that isn't
dominated by ad driven hits.

Well,.

If you are more specific, like "Amazon River", you'll likely get more specific hits. Or hit "advanced search" to further filter your results.

Try out Google's beta for scholarly articles:

BTW, if they didn't develop the search to hit commercial sites, they would soon be gone - that is where they get their income - off commercial sites.

Your google-fu is weak. ;)

Seriously, it's all about the wording of your query.
