Ok, sitting here and another post triggered a question. Has anybody tried using a simple emersion aquarium heater for liquifying or bottling? They are cheap and come in a lot of wattages, up to 250 watts at least. Enquiring minds want to know.....

no I had not thought of it but for us small guys it might work well and be cost effective

Should work........ slow perhaps, but cheap. They
are meant to heat to the 70F to 80F range so I
am not sure how high they go.

And of course they are glass....... you'd have to be
careful.

I'm not up on the newest heaters, but if I recall, the old ones would get hot pretty quick if they weren't submerged when they kicked on. May work for liquid honey but I don't know about trying to re-liquefy with?

Tried it. I was not happy with the results - if I had it turned down low enough to not scorch the honey, it did not liquify all the way to the outside. Perhaps with a circulator.

Your milleage may vary. I tried two - a completely submersible one and a clamp on one with similar unsatisfactory results.

Good luck.

And there you have it. Saved us all some work. Thanks.

Do you remember what strenth heater you used ? just curious as to weather or not a larger one might work for say five gallon pails of semi crystalized honey

Just put your buckets of crystalized honey up next to the wood stove and rotate them every now and then. Works for me.

If the aquarium heater was sealed in a container of water then submerged it probably wouldn't scorch the honey.

My aquarium has 2 500watt heaters. You can buy 1000w and higher.

I have wrapped a seed starter heat pad around a five gallon bucket. provides a very slow low heat that will work over time. wrapped the whole thing with towels. Not sure if it would work for heavily crystalized honey.

I like the idea of using low heat slowly, my opinion is high head destroys flavor.
