View Full Version : Making wood frames what wood

Had a beekeeper tell me he makes all him frames frome 2x4 white pine from Home depot is this the best way to go? would like to make about 2000 frames. What wood would you use?

It seems the typical 2x4 would have a lot of waste due to knots, bark corners, etc.

Why not just purchase them & spend the extra time using glue & doing a good job of stapling them together?
We always buy the better grade of frames & purchase the budget grade supers.
#1 son was showing me some frames that my dad had put together some 15 years ago.
Supers were 10 to 12 years old & needed there 1st good coat of paint since they were put into service.
All were dipped & very few need any wood repairs to speak of.

I don't know how anybody could afford to build anything with lumber from homedepot? I build my boxes with select southern yellow pine from a local lumber yard. They cost me 3.86 each to build plus my time. I priced white pine at HD to do the same thing and they would cost me 8.38 with their WP....Plus the southern yellow is a better wood if its available to you.

I don't mess with making frames because they end up being cheaper to buy once you factor in the time you have into them.
