What size is the lid?? I would think most any drill
press would have ample throat.

I would use a hand drill with a circle saw and pilot bit attachment.

I just use a hand drill with a hole saw drill bit. If you want to find the center of the cover the fastest way is to draw two lines. Front left to back right and front right to back left. Where the lines cross that is the center.

Ive used a hole saw with a drill before. Im looking for a drill press that will reach 8.5 inches to the center of the cover. I need to drill about 600 lids ,so I was going to set up a drill press with a jig and drill them . I use a drill press now but they dont reach the center , I dont think it matters much , I just want the jars to be in the center.

Harbor Freight has a deep throat drill press. It is pricey though at $219.

A cheaper solution would be to buy one of the cheap bench top units that doesn't have the throat requirement. On my cheap bench top I can take the column out and fix it so it comes out the top. You than clamp that to a board that gives you the throat you need.
Which way to go? It all depends if you have more time than money.
Side note. It seems the price of drill presses has gone up quite a bit with in the last two years. :(
