I've got about a dozen hives, all side-by-side, wrapped up together as a unit to conserve as much heat as possible. It was unseasonably cold, down to -25C for the last 2+ weeks.
One hive had a little yellow icicle coming out of the upper entrance (whether from freezing rain runoff or moisture on the inside I don't know)- while it did not actually clog the entrance, there were quite a few bees squeezing their way out and flying into the snow.
This is NOT the normal winter bee death flights. I counted nearly one bee per minute. While it was still very cold I had to quickly crack the top- and the winter cluster was huge! Probably 4 full frames of bees, but spread over 6 frames. They seemed agitated (and not just from my cracking the top)...
Is this hive doomed- or any ideas? The others are quiet and seemingly fine.
Thanks.
