I've got about a dozen hives, all side-by-side, wrapped up together as a unit to conserve as much heat as possible. It was unseasonably cold, down to -25C for the last 2+ weeks.
One hive had a little yellow icicle coming out of the upper entrance (whether from freezing rain runoff or moisture on the inside I don't know)- while it did not actually clog the entrance, there were quite a few bees squeezing their way out and flying into the snow.
This is NOT the normal winter bee death flights. I counted nearly one bee per minute. While it was still very cold I had to quickly crack the top- and the winter cluster was huge! Probably 4 full frames of bees, but spread over 6 frames. They seemed agitated (and not just from my cracking the top)...
Is this hive doomed- or any ideas? The others are quiet and seemingly fine.
Thanks.

Wow....I can only guess. Moisture inside driving the cluster up and making them look for drier (and warmer) quarters? Can you add some ventilation? Can you tell how heavy the hive is? If it's light, maybe some dry sugar?

Anyone else???

It sure does sound like Tracheal mites. Does your province offer testing?
