Has any one ever heard of the hypothesis, of swarm scouts, bees that are looking for a new nest site, locating a possible site then marking a physical trail with pheromones back to the hive so a emerging swarm can locate the new nest site?
A friend was trying to explane this occurrence to me but I was taking a dim view of it!

Yes, as I understand they leave a pheromone trail. Details of swarm scouts finding and voting for swarms are in Tom Seeley's Wisdom of the Hive.
