I!m intrested in ordering some MHQ, and have heard of a person or Co. that sells them by the name of (Foster) and can!t recall where I heard or read it?Does anyone know this queen producers address or phone no.?Also, those of you who have MHQ!s, are you happy with them?or would you discourage me from trying them?I!ve heard some bad,but mostly good about them from club members.Would like some of your viewpoints before getting in to deep:scratch:.Thanks in advance.Jack

Try Glenn Apiaries.

I haven't dealt with them so YMMV.

I think that all MH bees sold come from Glenn Apiaries but I may be mistaken. Also, they may not sell directly to the public. ???

My dad wanted Minn. bees and had read alot about them. He's getting up in years and has only 2 hives. I thought I'd suprise him and order him a swarm. While I was at it, I ordered me a swarm also. When they came {by Mail} I took them to him and he said you just keep them and I'll come take a look from time to time. They were expensive and produced no excess honey what so ever. Seemed to take a long time to build up. They never seemed to take off until late summer. Seemed to be more interested in robbing than anything else. They will be requeened this spring with the PURVIS BROTHERS GOLDLINE QUEENS, which have been by far the best move I have made as of late. Their performance is awesome!!! Check them out at purvisbrothersbees.com, I think thats right or Search Purvis brothers bees. It may be worth your time on the site.

Good Luck

Tom Glenn is the stock curator for the MH line. He gets his breeders from Dr. Marla Spivak at U MN.
She developed and currently maintains the line.

Glenn Apiaries only sells II breeder queens as mentioned prior to this post.
However, they list many of the other bee breeders/queen producers
that use his MH breeder queens to make MH type queens. Go here for a list:
http://www.glenn-apiaries.com/minn.html

We have used MH in our breeding program. They are very high yielding and build up well.
They are great for early splitting.
They may need more Fall feeding then the average colony.
They do not show much Varroa tolerance.

They're a good general breed. You'll need to watch them in the Fall and keep a handle on their mite load.

I have MH bees, I like them alot. They build up fast in the spring, or at least faster than my other hives. They are a little hotter than most, but I don't mind due to I suit up no matter what. I have not had any problems with mites at all, but niether has my other hives. I got mine from (Lake thompson honey) he is a member here on beesource.

I typically acqire minnesota hygenic cells in the spring from a not so local breeder. so I would guess the predictable cross would be minnesota hygenic/ all star cross. they are your basic italian x italian cross. they tend to be colored on the dark side and have traits much like any other itialian.... they typically build up early, rob more than most would like and are not so easy on winter stores.

besides for selling a few in the form of nuc I acquired this line of bee for their initial purpose... which was some genetic resistance to american foul brood.

I have ordered queens from WG Bee Farm in the past and can recommend them if he's still selling them. He was selling a MH x SMR/VSH, not sure if this is still the case. Nice guy to deal with as well.

I started two hives of Minnesota Hygienic form packages, and found them to be excellent. I started them in April about a month prior to blueberry bloom and in Michigan is can be very cold which it was. But by the second week of May they had drawn out the second deep and I got around thirty pounds of blueberry honey. I found them to be easy to work they were quiet on the comb and ended up giving me 100 pounds of surplus honey each.
When I checked in late summer for varroa the mite load was very light, they went into winter with abundant stores and excellent cluster size. They seem to work well in cool damp weather, and remain gentle when you have to work them is less than pleasant weather or during slow nectar periods. I did not notice unordinary robbing behavior.
For me they performed as advertised. I also have bought queens form Purvis Brother and highly recommend them.
