Tried my hand at grafting today. As I was attaching my cups to the bars I wondered if the queen would lay directly in those cups under the right circumstances. Doesn't she lay in cups pre-built by the colony?

I'm just a newbie but, will the hive make those queen cells unless they are dissatified with present queen?

I'm thinking of swarm cells. Do the bees build cells around eggs or does the queen lay in a queen cup?

I've had cell bars that were left in hives have eggs layed in them when the hive decided to swarm. But it's unlikely you will get the queen to lay in them.

peletier ask:
Do the bees build cells around eggs or does the queen lay in a queen cup?
tecumseh replies: yes to both your question. one defines an emergency queen cell vs a swarm cell.
like mr bush suggested you are quite unlikely to have a queen lay directly into those cups.
