I'm sure some of you are watching the Olympics. Have you noticed the GM ads. IMO they are outstanding, almost inspiring, especially the Buick ad. They make me want to go out and buy a GM product. GM may be on the ropes, but they will be back.

Never watch them......... explain what they are doing.Well, given what NBC is covering, one could conclude that the Olympics only consist of gymnastics, swimming, and women's beach volleyball.

Actually, the swimming has been interesting because of Michael Phelps and the USA men's relay swim teaming beating France after the French team said they would crush the USA and almost everyone thinking that the French would do it. Perhaps, the best USA relay win in history. Jason Lezak came from behind on the last leg of this 4X100 relay to win it. See

Phelps has now won more Olympic gold medals than anyone in history. Seven so far in this Olympics, all of which were world record times. He is perhaps the greatest Olympic athlete in history.

GM may be on the ropes, but they will be back.

Our local GM plant was scheduled to close on Dec. 31st. That date has been pushed back because of the demand for smaller vehicles and smaller engines. Good news for those who didn't take the early retirement.

The Chinese Press is refering to Michael Phelps as the American superfish.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Michael Phelps has never missed a chance to win gold in the Water Cube. The American superfish unsurprisingly took his sixth gold in men's 200m individual medley here on Friday along with a sixth world record in a row.

Phelps met no challenge at all as he led the race since jumping into the water and updated his own world record to one minute 54.23 seconds at leisure. It's the eight time he broke the world record of the event since 2003.

GM has dropped their sponsorship of the Olympics, this is their last year. They cited "changes in strategy and an evaluation of its return on advertising spending."

It's going to take more than some inspiring advertisements to save GM. Their latest cost-saving measure after dropping the Olympics? They've eliminated health benefits for their retirees:

Sadly, General Motors has become the latest American company to eliminate health benefits for its retirees over the age of 65. This is just the first major casualty of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) decision earlier this year to allow companies to discriminate against older retirees by treating them differently than younger retirees.

On the capital side, like a lot of companies these days, they're being hit hard by the credit crunch:

The cost of credit-default swaps on GM soared to $4.3 million upfront and $500,000 a year to protect $10 million of bonds, up from a total of $642,000 a year in May, CMA data show.

All the car companies are in trouble. The consensus of the financial folks with their fingers on the pulses of these struggling companies is that there is a 95% chance that at least 1 of the Big 3 American car companies is going to go bankrupt within 5 years.

You all know that's not really Michael Phelps don't you? It's actually Robert DeNiro.

It's comments like this that make me think GM ain't gonna make it. They're out of touch with reality.

GM Not Seeing Signs of U.S. Recovery, Wagoner Says (Update1)

By Jeff Green

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said he's not yet seeing signs of a recovery in the U.S. economy or in vehicle sales following the recent decline in oil prices.

``It still feels to me like we're in it,'' the CEO of the world's largest automaker said, referring to the sluggish economy that helped push GM to $15.5 billion in losses in the second quarter. He was speaking at the Athens Coney Island restaurant in Royal Oak, Michigan, after leading a morning parade of classic GM cars from the past 100 years.
