This article is badly written. Full of misleading statements. Drawing false conclusions, and as one comment stated the peer reviewed research links were left off the Reuters article.

Please don't waste your time, just leave this one alone.

Hi,
I've read a little about this before, it has a lot to do with bumble bees dieing off in California.
Here's a link to a group active in it.

as a general outline of 'the problem'* I wouldn't scoff at the article one bit. as a specific and general theme (see the problem below) it is much the conversation of at least some of the agricultural academic community.

*the problem is a general drift of pathogens from intensive agricultural operation to wild population. in the most recent past there has been similar problems in shrimp and salmond (farm raised) production.

The original research was published in an online website (http://www.plosone.org/doi/pone.0002771) which claims to publish papers in any scientific discipline provided a fee is paid. So we're not talking about a recognized, scientific journal. While the actual research on bumblebees may have some merit, the attempts to relate it to honeybees and CCD are highly speculative, and based on theories that have been debunked (e.g., CCD is caused by a virus brought to the U.S. on Australian bees).

tecumseh: I am not certain that I would call the idea that pathogen will escape from domestic population a theory (in the real world it is not even unproven). I am fairly certain I would not tag the word theory onto 'the possibility' that ccd could have some connection to pathogen from imported packages. I would classify this as a possible disease vector.
