I have new hives from packages and a nuc. All did fine building out the deep brood box so I put on the second. They got into that and built it out. The queens are in the 2d box laying eggs over almost the whole frame (very little honey) and there is NO bood in the bottom box (there are bees hanging around down there, but the frames have beautifully clean and empty cells). Am I supposed to reverse? Will the queen go back down there? The 2d box was getting full so we put a super on that they are building out. What's to keep her from just moving up into that too? How does this work so that come fall I have a bottom brood box with bees and a top box with honey to carry them over?
And then there's the question of whether I should still be feeding since the big nector flow is mostly over and they are still drawing out comb. (If I put syrup in, they will take it in a heartbeat)
Such are the dumb questions of us newbies . .

Yes, I would reverse them if the queen is laying in the top deep.

You should have to switch before winter cause bees move up throughout winter. Only thing is here in Virginia our winters have been pretty mild so that may not be a problem. We should have another flow later on this summer or at least we do on the western side of the state. You can feed syrup if you want if they will take it but you won't get honey out of your super it will probably be just syrup if your feeding while you have it on. As for keeping the queen from laying in the super a queen excluder will keep that from happening. Just make sure you don't trap her up in the super along with any drones that may be hanging out up there. None of your questions were dumb the only dumb question is the one that is never asked. Good luck with your bees and hope the rest of the season is a good one.
