1 frame observation hive

Math is not my forte.

I would like to build an observation hive just for short demos using only 1 deep and no feeder.

Can anyone give me some dummy directions on how to turn the beesource one into what I need :rolleyes:

If it's only temporary, you can leave a little extra room at the top and bottom for the bees to cluster or have extra ventilation. The "tew" hive I got from Brushy Mt. has about an extra inch both top and bottom. It doesn't have to be perfect. Minimum you need 1/4" top and bottom.

You can cut one out on a table saw:
The saw kerf can be the slot that the glass fits into. I used plexiglass one time and it buckled against the comb.
be sure to make ventilation holes in both ends and the top.
Make it do "little fingers" can not open the hive.

what did you use for the sides?
It appears that you just nailed plexiglass to the wood ends - is that correct?
I would be interested your plans.

Yes, it's plexi nailed, but drilled first. I like it because its very light, portable and easy to "load". We made three for the bee club. The plexi still has the plastic on it that's why it's not clear looking. I'll have to write up the plans. I copied the design from a guy in his 80's who put it together with scraps years ago.

Have you tried doubling the saw kerf so that it is 1/4"? I have found that the 1/4" plexiglass won't buckle like the 1/8".

At least that is what I use on the "Ulster" style tops that I sell.
