View Full Version : cross wiring shallow frames
can you extract honey from shallow frames with wired foundatiaon, without cross wiring them? will the shallow's hold up without it? trying to use up my last 2 shallows, then will be changing over to mediums.
thanks

It depends on the type extractor that you use. With a radial the cross wiring is not required. With the horizontal 2 or 4 frame extractor, it is just about required to cross wire - or else be very slow in the initial phase of the spinning.

I used an old Root two frame extractor for years with shallow frames without cross wired foundation. I would recommend crimp-wired foundation though. The comb held up fine, you just have to pay attention while extracting.
I do cross wire all my medium and full depth frames and have switched to a radial extractor.

I do it all the time with unwired foundation or foundationless in mediums. For years I've done it on thin unwired surplus in shallows.
