Does anyone have any thoughts on the types of wood that one should stay away from. Are the those that bees prefer???

I asked this question a few months ago...the response I got was the bees aren't nearly as picky you. I've seen people build these things out of pine, oak, cypress, cedar, etc. The only thing I've heard you might want to shy away from is plywood/strand board because of the potentially toxic glues (but I don't know what evidence this is based on).

Thanks Tim for the info.... I wanted to make sure to stay away from all of that and paint/stains if I can help it.

Sounds like your trying to take as natural a bent as you can. Chances are you're at least as well versed in woodworking as me (since I'm not very experienced), but you might keep in mind that even rot-resistant species like cedar and cypress will still warp when they get wet. I finished my cypress hives in a linseed oil and beeswax varnish that seems to be highly water repellent.
