I am waiting on my package april 12 , have my supers built 10 frame deeps . I bought 9 frame spacers to go in said deep . My question is I thought I had read someware to run 10 frames the first time out then drop back to 9 . Maybe this was just on the honey supers . Any thoughts on this or have I just read to much waiting on the girls and got my head disorganized ?

9 frame spacer is for when you have drawn comb and want to space out the super frames to allow for more honey to be packed in. the bees can bring in more nectar for 9 frames vs 10 frames. I actually have not tried it myself but I am sure others that have will comment on the actual difference.

when you are drawing out foundation you need to begin with ten (ie the stated number.. so 10 in 10 frame equipment and 8 in frame equipment) in the box. this keeps the girls drawing out the new foundation in a consistant manner. failure to do so will likely lead to bridge comb and often a very significant mess.

some folks like to reduce the number of frames in honey super by 1 or 2 (thats a total of either 9 or 8) to produce fat combs of honey which makes uncapping easier. for myself... I reduce all (top to the bottom of the stack) boxes to 9 frames once the foundation is pulled for the simple reason that this makes removing and examining the first frame (and most especially if you just wish to pull one frame from the center of the box) a bit less stressful for me and a bit less potentially damaging to the girls.
