i place mine up 8-10 feet if convenient, facing south in the shade. i have heard both shade/sun placement but i place mine in the shade so the wax won't warp/melt. ask me how i know ;)
if you have lemongrass oil, place a couple drops on the top bars of the frame and a drop or two on the outside entrance. if you have a frame of drawn comb that helps too. i limit my entrance size to about a square inch.
I agree with shughes. I try to place them facing south or east if possible. Closeness to water shouldn't be an issue.
