View Full Version : Back Order Problems

I'm reading in other forums that folks are having trouble with back orders of hives in particular. I "put in an order" for my hives and they "arrived" like three hours later. I did have a hold up on my bars as there was a "backorder" on borrowing dad's table saw. My brother had already borrowed it to make his bars. The good news is he preferred making my bars to loaning me the saw, so I dropped off the scrap lumber a couple of weeks ago and picked up my bars on Easter.

I "ordered" a nuc and it "arrived" in like 20 minutes.

While I was painting, I looked at my 99 cent multi-function paint scraper and realized I had my "hive tool." Saw a fancy version of the same thing with a cushion grip at Lowe's for 3 dollars - resisted the temptation.

Right now, the only thing on "backorder" is my covers. My hives are just too nice to have an ugly cover. I've settled on a design and cut some lumber but am having trouble getting the aluminum to cooperate. (I have figured out a solution.) They will weigh less than three pounds and I'm going to have them hinge on one side and latch down. Almost no lifting. No stooping or bending.

The more I read, the more I think tbh is the way to go for hobbyists. I won't go so far as to say they are the best thing ever, but for me, I'm quite happy I went the way I did.

I agree, TBHs rock! Hehe! I'm glad I'm going down this road too. I got my hive made in 2 days, bars, body, top and all. Total time was 3 hours. Then i relized the hive top was too heavy for me to lift cuz i made it so fancy and big. It must have weighed 10 pounds! So i pulled out a scrap peice of plywood and painted it. TADA! Thats why its good to be simple! Good idea about that hive tool... i will have to go down in the basement and hunt down a paint scraper...:D Or maybe I'll just buy a $2 one at the hardware store if i cant find a good one.
And since I have chickens... i dont need a bee brush! You dont even need chickens or ducks or whatever... you can just use a handfull of tall weeds/grass.
Well, hope more people will use TBHs and relize how easy and cheap it is. You dont have to spend $300!!!
Have a great day!

Ditto.

My hives are also just about done. I poured some wax on my saw kerf bars today and made a nice mess. I figured out pretty quick that all you have to do is run something down the length to scrape off the excess wax and they look just fine. I'm doing one hive with waxed kerf bars and one with little scrap wood triangles that Dave W hooked me up with. I'll glue and brad those together. I have to attach the corrugated plastic "roofs" and that is just about it. I'll be ready for bees!

My blog's got construction photos and more ramblings.
