I went up to my out yard yesterday, sunny, windy, 60+ degrees. This is a mix of my hives and my buddies hives scattered over 3 sites within 3 miles of each other. Last year it was all vetch early and soybeans later. This year will be less vetch and more beans unfortunately.

I checked about 18 hives in all. One of mine was building up but very light on stores. I did the sugar on newspaper on it. We'll see how they do with it. My buddy had one small hive that obviously starved, heads in cells, trying to cover a small patch of brood. All of the others still had stores, some had a bunch. All are building up nicely, a few are booming already. It looks like I'll start the year with 26 or so decent hives with 5 nucs coming. My buddy has about that as well.

We'll be looking for another yard or two this year, hopefully at least one with good mesquite cover. If the boll weavil eradication ever gets completed here we'll have plenty of cotton too. Right now they are spraying from the air every few days.

You might want to try feeding the bees a C & H product called Drivert.
It's 3% invert sugar and it is more attractive to the bees than granulated sugar. The Drivert is hygroscopic in that it will absorb water from the atmospher and make a soft candy.
Drivert is used to make cake and doughnut icing.Good luck.

So where does one find a source for Drivert?
