I'm from Manitoba Canada and we are looking to expand in the honeybees. We have quite abit of alfalfa around here. Several guys in the seed business and alot for hay.
Within a mile of me we have aprox 10 quarters in alfalfa all around us. Double in a 2 mile radius. Even more on a 3 mile and 4 mile radius
1st question. How many hives could we put in one site on our land
2nd if we were to expand and put hives about 2 miles away how much is the going rate for rent for the land.? And there would be several quarters in alfalfa seed, so hw many hives?
They would be put out July 1 and brought home last week of August first week in September.
Lastly, we are considering getting a guy in to custom pollinate for alfalfa seed. (leaf cutter bees)Aprrox 47 acres. We are considering putting some honey hives out there as well. How many hives for the 47 acres.
Just a note for those that do not know, leaf cutters do not feed on the nectar but rather the leaves of the alfalfa plant.

Id set a yard of at least 30 or so per yard. You have lots of forage, to support that, and probably could push it to fourty if you wanted. Yards that big will start causing you problems with robbind during rounds, though.

I rent my yard sites for 50 lbs of honey per site. Keeps them happy. Dont skimp, its thier land, and that bit of honey make our livelyhood, unless you go an buy up the land to set your hives on. :)

If it is your alfalfa seed crop put a yard on it. you will be happy with the honey comming off a seed alfalfa crop!
