I live in Connecticut and I am a newbee starting 2 hives this spring. I was wondering what pests I will have to deal with up north? Small hive beetles, varroa, skunks, racoon. I could use a list of what to expect.

Small Hive beetles shouldn’t be much of a problem because of your location. Varroa defiantly yes, don’t forget trachea mites, skunks and racoons sometimes. Hornets and wasps sometimes. If your not getting any of the bee journals I would recommend doing so. Bee Culture and American Bee Journal also if you can get lots of good information here. The best defense is knowing your enemy and you will figure out how to combat them. welcome to beekeeping your in for some fun, if you like to learn new things you have taken up the right hobby.

Stratford's down in that "NYC suburb" part of Connecticut, so bears probably aren't much of an issue. I grew up in the northern part, and it's much more wooded. You should also be aware of mice, who sometimes like to nest in cozy warm hives in the winter. Consider a mouse guard (or appropriately sized wire mesh) for the entrance. A search on this forum will yield more info.

Ah, I was going to ask the same question. I'm starting out in CT with 2 hives also. I knew about the mites but wasn't sure about wax moths and beetles. No bears on our farm though, deer and turkey but no bears.

Hi Grimbee
In CT we have a bear problem. No problem with SHB.
Skunks and raccoons rarely are a problem if you have these problems there are solutions.
Varroa is still the biggest challenge here in CT and on all the world.
Less problem with trachea mite but we should keep an eye open.
