Another blast of winter weather blew through here the past few days. Lots of snow here and in the mountains, snowmobilers stranded, bus wreck, skiiers lost....
It's 6 degrees F this morning here in NM, and 55F in Boston! I see Ky and WV are in the 50's also. Too cold to check bees but I'm a bit nervous about these temperature variations.
How are others faring during this unseasonable weather? The Florida keepers reported that they thought they'd come through their cold snap in good shape. I'm wondering about the folks in the normally very cold regions that are getting a couple of days of summer.

Bees were flying yesterday and today, although one was was dead quiet (purposeful use of the word "dead"). I came home too late to pop the top but I was worried about that one going in to the winter. Based on the amount of dead that the hive right next to it pulled out, it looks like they're fine and were busy yesterday. I wish I was home today to see them flying.
Someone a few towns over lost 3 of 5 so far. He says it's the combination of the dry end of summer and the cold weather. We had quite a bit of snow and a pretty good cold snap. I don't know if this is the January "thaw" that will kick the queen into gear but I hope not. It seems early to get going and if we have weather like we've had, Spring is too far away.
Bees here were flying well today. I wish I could have stayed home from work and checked them over. Tomorrow the temps drop back down into the thirty's. The two hives I checked looked ok. Hopefully they had a chance to move some stores around and make their cleansing flights.

Bees were making a lot of orientation flights yesterday with temps in the upper 60's. Last Thursday the low has 16. I bet it sure is confusing for the queen....lay eggs, stop laying eggs..lay eggs.

Rain..Rain..Rain..Storm after storm after storm here on the Beautiful Southern Oregon Coast. It is that time of year for us. In a couple of weeks it should stop, the sun will shine, and warm up a bit. This nicer weather will last about two to three weeks, just a tease to remind us Spring is on it's way. Last year it lasted for a couple of months. We all thought our seasons were reversed.
Bees are flying in-between storms when the temps reach 50 and above...and they are finding pollen when they do. Girls are looking pretty good.
