So what's the best bet for a small timer, Bee Culture or American Bee Journal?

I vote both for at the least 1 year then you can choose.

For the money involved, get both.

I recommend HM's advise I take both but if I had to choose on or the other I would chose bee culture no real reason I just prefer it.

I feel the same as Riverrat. I get both but prefer bee culture.

Both have good information. If money is an issue, you can request them through your public libraries interlibrary loan program.

As a small timer, I prefer (and subscribe to) Bee Culture, but when my kids asked for ideas for Christmas presents, I said ABJ...

I'm with honeyman. I have both and like them both. Get them both and then cut one later! I DARE ya! ;)
Personally, I like ABJ best....but I DO think that Bee Culture might have a smaller/hobby beekeeper feel to it than ABJ.
They have differing styles in my view. What may appeal to me might not to you.... I say make up your own mind. See if you can get some copies for free from some other members of a local club or check the library and read thru a few and decide for yourself.

They are both very oriented toward the hobbiest or sideliner, and very reader friendly. I prefer ABJ but both have published some excellent articles.

Well, that settles it then. Thanks everyone, looks like I'm going to see which one my library has & then subscribe to the other one!
