View Full Version : Question about putting together frames
shelley

I decided on wedged top wood frames. I'm wondering do I actually detach the wedge from the frame. It's attached now. I just remove wedge and reattach after putting the foundation in?
Just wanted to make sure before I go destroying.
I'm new to bee keeping and getting ready for spring.
Thanks.:)

yes you remove the wedge but after you build the frame. Once frame is built, remove wedge and insert foundation and reinsert wedge and nail in place. I prefer to use wired foundation with hooks, as the hooks will fit under the wedge and give a secure fit.

Or leave it attached and wax the foundation in with a wax tube fastener...

I don't really think it matters that much shelley.... I personally remove the wedge before the frames is constructed.

I remove the wedge, and with my hive tool scrape any remaining wood off the wedge or the top bar of the frame where the wedge was attached. This way the wedge fits better when you nail it back in place.

I remove the wedge before I assemble. If I get sloppy with the glue and it drips into the channel where the wedge had been, it's easier to clean out rather than if I mess up the wedge itself. Everyone has their own method though, so do what works for you!

I found clamping the foundation in with a wedge unnecessary and use grooved top bars. The wedge is more work both when the frame is new and when one renews it years down the line.

I prefer the wedge top, grooved bottom
