Australia, taking the rap for introducing IAPV
to the USA. But Benton and Jones have brought
Cyprian bees from the holy land in 1880, and perhaps
also IAPV.

From a news article in 1880

“D. A. Jones, a member of the Canadian
parliament, recently returned to
his home at Beeton, Ontario, from the
island of Cyprus and the Holy Land.
His visit there was for the sole purpose
of securing queen bees from those countries.”

“Frank Benton Writing
from Palestine to a friend in New York,
Mr. Jones said of his journey: "I have
been delighted with my trip through
these parts on account of finding a very
superior race of bees—a race that I feel
sanguine, when ' tested, will prove a
boon to America; and as I am the first
to import them, I hope to get enough to
America to get the race established
there in purity. There appears to be
but one race of bees in the Holy Land,”

“Those I obtained in the valley of
Sharon, Jerusalem, and all about the
hills of Judea, also east of Jordan and
the Red sea,”

But IAPV was merely first detected in Israel.

There is no credible claim that it originated there.

I agree!

My post is NOT attempting to make any such
claim that IAPV originated in Israel. Nor is it making a claim
that IAPV was present in the Holy Land in1880.

I only provide a case for the import of bees to the USA prior to
the Australian imports from areas that are known today to have IAPV
in their honeybee population. Entering a degree of doubt to the claims
IAPV in the USA came from Australia bees.

I believe they've already found IAPV in samples that predate the recent Australian imports into the US. They are now saying that IAPV apparently arrive in the US in 2002, three years prior to the Australian imports.

Of course that's not to say it couldn't have come from Australian imports indirectly. It's entirely possible it came across the Canadian border from the imported bees they had at the time. I really doubt there are suitable samples in storage to prove by what route IAPV entered the country. Canada, royal jelly, or something else entirely.

Hello Tim,

I do not see where they have stated an "arrival date for CCD".
All that is stated is that researchers “Evans and Chen have tested samples from commercial US beekeepers collected between 2002 and 2007 and found the virus has been in the US since at least 2002.”

So we have an “at least” date but no arrival date as far as I am aware.

Not to worry, gotcha covered.
I took care of it months ago.
In Bee Culture.
Two different editions, even.

It is really not at all far-fetched, and it fits the evidence better
than any other scenario offered.
