My son just started shooting air rifle in JROTC. Anyone know of any good web sources for technique etc.? Also best price on a starter rifle---to practice with. Looking @ the Avanti prices----geeze just as much as a center-fire deer rifle or more depending on the airgun model.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

This is the rifle my father got me to teach me to shoot when I was 12. It isn't an airgun, it's a real rifle. It's lightweight and has almost no kick. Retails for about 250.
*edit* The reason I posted a real rifle instead of an air rifle is that I wasn't sure what you meant by "starter rifle" as opposed to "starter air rifle." If this isn't what you wanted, my apologies.

I am not the rifle expert in this house, but DH is, and he's not here at the moment. Anyway, he has owned a couple of different airguns. Benjamin makes an okay airgun for playing with. RWS has really fine airguns for accuracy and speed (and money). They are on the expensive side, and shooting airguns in general is different from rifles. If you want an accurate one, look at the RWS models, but be prepared to spend some bucks. One place you can get some good information and personal opinions is on the purple martin forum. Several of the members use them for sparrow and starling control, and you will find lots of opinions and lots of info there. I know a couple of them recommend Gamo's. If you want me to email you a link, let me know.

The Sheridan 5mm is rock solid but not match quality accurate. Been around over 50 years. Scope mounting is available and it is a good plinker. Variable pumping modifies power/velocity. Starts around $170

Any chance it would be sufficient for woodchucks and raccoons in a live trap? I would imagine it's a little underpowered?

i can relate to the first poster. with snake shot, cb shot and 40 gr. hollow points a .22 is very versatile. i live in very hilly, wooded terrain so the only other long gun i use is a 12 ga. with assorted shot. i feel comfortable dealing with anything from a gopher to a bear.
if i was buying for a youth i would check out the rossi trifecta. it's a single shot with three barrels, .22, .243 and 20 ga. i've seen them for $200 new.

Five pumps and it hits like a .22 short, will bring down most small game. Coons and chucks might need a head shot as the body mass is a little large.
