Late fall or early winter is the best time to plant the Evodia seed. This way, the seed will naturally be stratified during winter and will emerge in spring. I will be picking up a fall supply of seed in late September. If anyone wishes to plant this tree this fall, please pre-order now. The seed will be shipped out in early October. This way I will be able to get enough seed to go around when I pick them up. A packet of seed contains several hundred seeds and is priced at $5.00 postage included to the 48 states.

I have several Evodia trees growing now from seed I planted this summer and all have been pre-sold. This is a popular tree among beekeepers and I'd like to see it more widely grown. Anyone interested in purchasing the seed may PM or email me at: bees@mysite.com

Thanks to all who have ordered or inquired. Here are some answers to the more common questions about the Evodia Tree. They are listed in my nursery source books as hardy in USDA zones 4 thru 8. They are medium sized trees with a height of 20 to 30 feet with about the same spread. They bloom in summer when few other trees are in bloom (July or August) in most climates.
The blossoms are small, white, fragrant and abundant. Grows best in full sun, prefers moist but well-drained soil, widely adaptable to various soil PH and types. May be planted and grown in summer but does best when planted in a protected seed bed during late fall or early winter. Rodent protection is needed or rodents may destroy the young seedlings.

When we plant this seed in our nursery during the early winter, we use a prepared soil bed with a wooden frame that is burried a few inches in the ground and then covered with a screen wire to keep rodents out. Some who plant a few seed for their own use, use an old hive body which is burried a few inches in the soil, filled with a good soil mixture (it must drain well) and then cover with screen. When planted in this manner, we get a good germination rate the next spring and then we transplant the seedlings to individual growing pots. Hope this answers some of the questions. I will mail the seed orders very early in October.

All the orders for Evodia seed which I received by Sept 22 were mailed on 9/24. They should be arriving soon. I will mail the later orders out on 9/28.
There are a few packets left if anyone else wishes to get some seed.

Thanks to all who ordered. Hopefully, we can get this tree to growing in diverse places for the benefit of all the bees.

Thanks to all who have ordered Evodia seed. Due to the greater than expected demand, I have ordered a new supply of Evodia daniellii seed.

I am pleased to provide these seed at what I think is a good price in order to get more of them growing nationwide. Late fall and early winter is a good time to plant the seed for spring germination, so if you did not get in on the initial supply of seed, now is a good time to order some for you and your neighbors. Remember, if your close neighbors have some trees, your bees will benefit.

A packet contains several hundred seed and some growing information. You may use PayPal or mail a check. Your choice.

Mailing address is: Garry Forsythe, 25294 Flanagan Road, Athens, AL 35614

These new orders will be mailed out by mid October, so there will be plenty of time for planting. Thanks.

I second that!!! Thanks for the seeds. I'm in the process of germinating some of them (100) for planting right now and have about 3400 left over.:) I'm getting ready to start germinating some more as most of the ones I've already started germinating have sprouted and are in planters.

I planted about a dozen of these about 5 years ago here in WA state. I only have one left. Shes about 8' tall but hasn't bloomed once. The other nice one I had got killed when i transplanted it. If anyone else has any extra seeds and wouldnt mind mailing some I would accept the offer (PM ME).

I know one thing... the foliage STINKS like a skunk.

Also, the guy I got my seeds from had me put them in the freezer for a couple weeks. Said something about the ice cracks the shell??? Sounds like some of these seeds are already spouting. Were they froze?

The easiest way to germinate the seeds are to place them between paper towel soaked with water (four thicknesses above and under.) When the core soak up the water and begins to sprout it will bust the hull and grow a tap root. When the seed does this it is ready for some soil. I just started germinating a couple hundred more after trying a smaller amount to see how this method panned out. I also froze the seeds after the first round of germination in hopes that the freeze would crystallize and expand the hull in order to provide quicker germination on the next round.

I have never heard of the tree but I do like trees and if anyone has any seeds to sell send me a pm and I would be glad to pay for them. I have 3 acers that needs some trees on it and if they help my bees I am all for it.
Thanks,
Marcus

Anyone know of a major nursery that would have two to three year old rootstock?

I googled and found a couple that were out of stock. :(

I have sold all my seedlings for this spring. I will have seed available in September if my supplier isn't out. They are getting more difficult to obtain, even in bulk. Late fall or early winter is the best time to plant the seed. Order early if you want seed this fall. I am still getting request for seed now and only have a couple of ounces left til the Sept order arrives.

I planted several in my own area and sold dozens of seedlings to local folks. Hopefully they will benefit the bees in all of north Alabama. I have sent seed to dozens of states and to some international destinations. I'd like to see this tree become very common.

Are the trees self pollinating? I have one that produces a lot of seed, but there are no others around.

LtlWilli

I am going to say that they have what some books called a "perfect flower", which means that it's blooms have the ability to self pollinate , even if insects are not around. The wind blows the pollen down into the bloom. Many peaches and plums are that way.

Hi i have bought evodia plants from Forest farm. they have two varieties.
Both are great for bee forage. They also carry vitex N. which by the way looks remarkably like a widely known ilegal plant::o:)
