My beautiful nwc queen arrived today. While attempting to transfer her from the cage she was transported in into a push in cage she got away from me. She flew onto my hand and flew away into the gray sky. I watched her cork screw up and over the roof of my house. I sat there like a statue for about 10 minutes. It started to rain and I was just about to give up when I saw her circling overhead. She came back! She landed right on the frame. As I make a move for her she gets away from me and off she goes again up and over the roof of the house. My 2 daughters come outside to tell me that dinner is ready and I put them on spotter duty. After a few minutes they catch a glimpse of her flying around the roof of the house. She comes down again and gets caught in a spider’s web between the gutter and the house, about 5 feet from me. The spider and I break for her at the same time. I'm a step quicker and I squash him when he is about 1" away from her (I hate killing spiders, but this is MY nwc queen) After I kill spidey I figure I'm home free, wrong! She breaks free, drops a couple of feet and is back flying. Up and over the roof she goes. She comes back to me again lands on the side of my house, and starts grooming herself. I catch her, she is in my hands. Now I should have done this whole process inside my screened in porch. I should have brought her inside at this point, but I didn’t. I try to get her inside the cage and she gets away from me and, you guessed it, up and over the roof. About an hour has gone by and the rain is getting harder and the sky is getting darker. She comes down and lands on the frame next to the push in cage. I quickly break open a couple of honey cells on the frame and put a dab of honey on one of her wings. She attempts to fly but she can't. I scoot her under the queen cage and she is mine. I will never ever ever do this outside again.

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever...Or something like that. She came back twice, so here's to hoping she overwinters beautifully and gives you a killer crop in 2008!

Great story!
