Yesterday and today I was in two different bee yards and the smell is real strong. The goldenrod flow is just getting started and it smells strong already.

I hope we get a good flow this season.

i have tons of goldenrod flowers, but it's so dry I feel they have no nectar - and no bees are working them

Here in Orlando the last 10 days have been pretty dry, but the 2 weeks prior to that were extraordinarily wet. So I think the ground got plenty of moisture before the bloom started and now we've had 10 days of bright sunshine for them to grow and bloom. It is just getting started, but if we get a reasonable mix of sun and rain for the next few weeks it could be a bumper nectar flow.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and enjoying that strong smell over the hives.

We've had golden rod blooming for 3 weeks but little flow at this time. Fall aster should start up soon.

What is that smell anyway?

It kind of reminds me of buttered popcorn, but it is far sweeter. The lightness of the aroma reminds me of maple syrup, but only because it is the sweetness, it doesn't smell like maple at all.

I just can't put a word on that smell.

Last year I thought something was wrong w/ the hives because the smell was so strong.. but to me it smelled more like an old dirty sweaty sneaker. The honey frame I'm eating from now is from Golden Rod.. has the flavour of butterscotch.. some w/ a carmel taste.

Stinky locker room. The first time I smelled it, I thought my bees were dead and rotting. We're probably a month away from goldenrod bloom here.

no golden rod here yet, looks to be another month or so, not even bubbing yet on tops of plants, maybe we will get some rain and have a desent flow this year...

Well, I found out why it does not smell the same as last year. The bees are heavily working a eucalyptus tree just down the road from the hives.

There are 3 large trees covered in small white blossoms and the bees are just covering the tree. 2-3 bees on each blossom that I could see.

Does Eucalyptus make a good honey?
