I found this muppet in the hive entrance yesterday. It had already been murdered by the bees and were they mad ? I managed to hook it out with a long stick but dropped it before being chased back to the house. A couple of hours later I went back to pick it up but the bees had posted guards flying circuits about ten yards from the hive. I was chased back to the house again and called it a day. This morning Alex my wife said, "well I've done nothing to upset the bees". She went to the hive with no problems so here it is. It's got waspy stripes but although the wings are lacey they're moth shaped. The thing is about 2 1/2 inches long. Anyone recognise it ?

If you cover it in chocolate there looks to be enough to even invite the neighbors over for lunch. That thing is huge...But I don't have a clue what it is. Glad they are not in Virginia.

It looks similar to the Hummingbird Moth which we have here in the U.S. I don't know if they are also in your area of Greece. I believe it is a moth, but not certain of the type. Hummingbird Moth's wingspan is 40-50mm.

That is some type of sphinx moth, from a quick google search it looks like it could be a tomato hornworm sphinx or hawk moth (same family as the hummingbird sphinx).

I'd guess it was looking for a safe place to hide at night and well...didn't choose so good...

My boys each have one that have pupated and they are anxiously awaiting them to hatch out to add to their bug collections.....
