I always thought the cell phone theory was first class bunk. Not sure why you think eliminating that possibility leaves only pesticides at fault? I don't think it's pesticides either...

Sounds more like a pathogen (virus or bacterium, perhaps) than a pesticide, to me. If irradiated comb becomes "safe," the radiation must be altering something in the comb, and radiation doesn't have a great effect on pesticides that might be present.
